Canadian organizations fight pornography
and sex trafficking
Canada ranks in top three for hosting cybersex and child
sexual abuse websites
“WE ARE SIX victims inside of the house
of my recruiter. My recruiter hurt me
everyday when I do something bad he
didn’t like. If I don’t follow him, he’s
going to hurt me, to spank me, to slap
me in the face in front of the people.”
This is the story of Cassie, a girl from the
Philippines who was forced to perform
sexual acts in front of a computer for
nearly five years.
Rescued by International Justice
Mission (IJM), Cassie is one of many
children who have been abused through
cybersex trafficking – a form of slavery
where pedophiles pay
online to direct live
sexual abuse of
children.
Canada ranks in the
top three countries for
hosting cybersex
websites and selling material containing
child sexual abuse ( www.Cyber Tip.ca).
“It’s shocking as Canadians to think that
this demand is coming from within our
own nation,” says Kelly Cameron,
manager of strategic engagement at IJM
Canada, in an interview on See Hear Love.
IJM launched a campaign in March
called #NotOnMyScreen ( www.NotOn-MyScreen.ca) to help shut down cybersex
trafficking. The goal is to build awareness
by putting campaign stickers on mobile
devices, taking a pledge and spreading
the word through social media.
“But with awareness comes responsib-
ility,” says Ed Wilson, executive director
of IJM Canada, “and we are calling on
Canadians to do whatever they can to
help stop cybersex trafficking of
children. The campaign is meant to
serve as a conversation starter for
families and church and community
groups, and a visible challenge to those
who, through their online behaviours
and habits, may be at risk of being
drawn into the dark world of cybersex
trafficking of children.”
Defend Dignity, another Canadian
organization that fights human traffick-
ing, is taking a stance against another
form of sexual exploitation in Canada
– pornography. Choose Change (www.
choosechangecanada.org) invites people
to contact five Canadian organizations
that they say facilitate sexual exploita-
tion through their practices and policies:
Amazon, Fairmont Hotels, The Keg
Restaurant, TekSavvy and the Toronto
Public Library. Their website explains
how each company is
enabling pornography
and includes action
buttons to send emails
that request change.
“Porn is harmful
and needs to be
curtailed,” says Glendyne Gerrard,
director of Defend Dignity. “It directly
impacts the demand for trafficking.”
Gerrard hopes Choose Change will
encourage less sexual exploitation and
trafficking. She hopes “We will see kids
believing that their value and worth are
not wrapped up in their bodies – that
they each have dignity simply for who
they are and how God created them to
be. We will live in a Canada where rape
culture is replaced by respect culture.
There will be less misogyny and more
mutual respect and equality between the
genders. What a Canada that would be.”
