BEHIND THE SCENES
Karen Stiller of Ottawa, Ont., and
Bill Fledderus of Hamilton, Ont., are senior
editors of Faith Today.
When we heard Wilma Derksen has written a new book called The Way of Letting Go:
One Woman’s Walk Toward Forgiveness, we knew we wanted to interview her for Faith Today.
Like many Canadian Christians,
we’ve tracked along with the Derksens’ tragic, yet also redemptive,
story for years. Their daughter
Candace was murdered in Winnipeg
in 1984, and since then the Derksens
have walked a journey with dignity
and grace few of us can imagine.
Wilma’s take on forgiveness is
gritty and honest. It can help all of
us living the lifelong process of
Do you remember the 2012 research report Hemorrhaging Faith:
Why and When Canadian Young
Adults Are Leaving, Staying and Returning to Church?
We thought of it right away when
we heard about a book coming out
in October by new Ottawa author
Rebecca Gregoire Lindenbach. It’s
called Why I Didn’t Rebel: A Twenty-Two-Year-Old Explains Why She
Stayed on the Straight and Narrow
– and How Your Kids Can Too.
Her experience and research
show when parents are authentic
and real in their faith (and avoid
trying to be or portray a “perfect”
Christian life) their kids are more
likely to stick with their faith.
That’s no surprise to those famil-
iar with Hemorrhaging Faith, but we
hope her article and book will fur-
ther spread this important truth,
which through that report (www.
HemorrhagingFaith.com) is still
shaping how churches do ministry
in Canada and how parents engage
with their youth.
Read her story, and take heart.
Take a moment to think about
these stories presented in Faith
Today. Where else could you read a
thoughtful Christian examination
of the CBC show Pure (see page 34)?
Or hear so clearly the voices of
Canadian immigrant church leaders
(see page 45)?
The work Christian journalism
does in Canada is crucial – asking
questions, telling stories, investigating issues and sharing information we can’t find elsewhere.
