BEHIND THE SCENES

That’s how we ended up chatting
last June with Sid Koop, a guest for
a webinar on youth and church.
Koop is executive director of Truth
Matters, a ministry dedicated to
“help the next generation see and
experience the truth of Jesus Christ.”
Koop has had to think and increasingly speak to churches about
how we can walk alongside youth
struggling with gender identity
issues. We found ourselves wondering together if an essay in Faith
Today could help us all grapple with
this thorny and often painful issue.
In today’s heated political climate,
it’s a discussion we might rather
avoid. It’s controversial, difficult and
ripe for misunderstandings.
Koop didn’t take up his ministry
because of this particular issue, but
as a leader working with youth, and
working with leaders who work
with youth, he has found it keeps
coming up. And so he has some
practice articulating an approach
that is faithful to Scripture and
compassionate at the same time.
That seemed valuable to us, and so
we asked him to put it on paper.
Koop writes clearly that his
“thoughts on this are by no means
the final word on the issue, but they
might be a starting point for an
important conversation we need to
have, and that I am sure is happen-
ing in churches across Canada.”
So, for biblical faithfulness and a
piece to start you thinking, pour
yourself a cup of tea or coffee and
see page 36.
We also trust you’ll be as challenged and moved as we were by
our cover essay. It explores how and
what we want, and how they might
fit differently than we expect into
God’s love and plans for us.
Toronto writer Jen Pollock Michel
won awards for a book she wrote on
the topic (which we reviewed in
September 2015), and this new essay
draws again on that depth of research, thought and experience.
For Christmas we invited Sarah
Bessey to share why and how she
celebrates the Advent season with
her family and her church.
As always, there’s lots more in
this issue than we have room to talk
about here. Enjoy, and please consider our three-for-one festive
subscription deal – it’s a perfect
Christmas giving opportunity.
May the peace and joy of Christ
be with you! /FT
