The latest news, notes, ideas and analysis from the Canadian Christian community
IF YOU’VE BROWSED the shelves
at any major bookstore in Canada
recently, you’ve noticed a growing
trend – colouring books for adults.
Since the release of The Secret Garden
by illustrator Johanna Basford in 2013,
adult colouring books have soared in
popularity. In 2015 three of Amazon’s ten
bestselling books were colouring titles.
Christians have gotten into the
act. Restore My Soul: A Coloring Book
Devotional Journey by Montreal-based author and artist Ann-Margret
Hovsepian combines devotionals with
Scripture-based colouring pages.
“We are made in the image of
a creative God,” says Hovsepian.
“Colouring can take us back to the
sheer joy of scribbling on a page.”
Hovsepian, author of several
devotional books for girls, isn’t a
professional illustrator. “I’ve always been
interested in different creative hobbies
– calligraphy, lettering, mixed-media
on Scripture and a prompt for prayer or
action. “It’s important to have dedicated
time to read Scripture and pray –
colouring pages can’t replace that,” says
Hovsepian. “They’re a complement,
a way to extend that quiet time, to
meditate on whatever God put on your
heart.” Some of the illustrations include
room to write out a prayer.
Colouring can be a creative outlet
for people who might feel they aren’t
artistic, says Hovsepian. “You don’t
have to take pictures of your colouring
page and put it on Instagram. Just have
fun. This is between you and God.”
Restore your soul with colouring
Christians have broken into the colouring scene
art, journalling. It was something I did
for fun,” she says. But when she started
to post some of her doodles online, her
friends were enthusiastic.
Restore My Soul has 40 devotionals
with accompanying illustrations.
The illustrations range from abstract
geometric patterns to images taken
from the day’s reflection.
“This is a devotional, a way to have
quiet time with God,” she says. “I tried
to create devotionals and drawings
that encourage the reader to slow
down and reconnect with the Lord, to
rest in Him and be restored.”
Each devotional includes a reflection
