CANADIANS THANKING GOD
A new Angus Reid study says most Canadians
pray at least several times a month. Only
15 per cent of respondents said they never
pray, while 20 per cent said they pray daily in
private. The study found the most common
reason Canadians pray is to thank God, closely
followed by asking God for help. Surprisingly,
57 per cent of respondents who say they
reject religion also believe prayer adds to the
lives of those who pray. www.angusreid.org
BAP TIZING MIGRAN TS
A pastor in Hamburg, Germany, held a
baptismal service in early May, baptizing
around 80 migrant and refugee converts
from Islam. Some locals were critical,
suggesting the conversions were a ruse
to increase their odds of getting refugee
status. The pastor says he is very careful to
only baptize those whose conversions are
sincere. One of the women baptized also
pointed out that those who are baptized
often face brutal harassment and even
death threats if they return to the refugee
asylum centres. www.christiantimes.com
PRESERVING JESUS’ TOMB
Three ancient Christian traditions have
united to restore what many believe was
Jesus’ tomb in the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre (below). The last renovations on
the shrine were in 1947 when the British
government in control of the region
installed a steel cage to keep it from
collapsing. Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic
and Armenian Christians all regularly
worship at the site. They have struggled to
agree on restoration efforts until recently
when Israeli police briefly evacuated the
church building for fear the shrine would
collapse. www.phys.org
UNDERSTANDING THE
DEMOGRAPHIC
This spring, Pew Research Center examined
how strong religious affiliation affects
people’s daily lives. The study suggests
that highly religious individuals are much
happier with their lives, spend more time
with their families and invest more in their
communities. Interestingly, the results
remain true regardless of age, income,
education and family status. However, the
study found religious people are no different
on issues including telling white lies, ethical
shopping choices or health and fitness.

BIBLES FOR CUBA
The Canadian Bible Society plans to send a
million Bibles to support Cuban Christians.
The Cuban Biblical Commission estimates
Christianity is growing between 10 and 15
per cent annually, but Bibles are scarce on
the island nation. Nearly the entire Cuban
population can read, so the Canadian Bible
Society and their Cuban partners expect this
donation to greatly strengthen the Church.
