o me! O LIFE! By: Joshua Lewis
Life is mysterious and so are we.
In the midst of such a mysterious life,
it can be hard to answer the question,
“Who am I?” Everyone seems to say,
“Just be yourself!” But what does that
mean? Sometimes that seems a lot
easier to say than do.
The Apostle Paul says we see things,
“imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in
a mirror” (1 Corinthians 13: 12). No one
knows what will happen in the future.
And which of us can claim to fully
understand our past and what makes
us who we are?
In my own life, I’ve gone through
many different phases. At different
points in my life, I was obsessed with
skateboarding, guitar, weight lifting,
reading, philosophy and religion. I was
searching for my identity in these things.
I would think to myself, “Ah yes, this
is who I am...a skateboarder!” But after
a little while, it got tiring trying to always
prove to the world and to myself who
The reality is, none of those phases of
mine were able to define who I am. Just
as life is mysterious, I am mysterious
In the above verse, Paul goes on to
say that one day we will fully know the
answers, just as God fully knows us.
Until then, we hold onto His promises
and truth as we are growing. Until then,
we embrace a whole lot of uncertainty
and learn to find joy in not knowing
everything about ourselves.
In reality, it’s actually a relief to be ok
with the uncertainty.
