BEHIND THE SCENES
Karen Stiller of Port Perry, Ont., and
Bill Fledderus of Hamilton, Ont., are senior
editors of Faith Today.
This issue of Faith Today contains the type of stories we love to do – and a type we don’t. The latter is, of
course, our examination of what’s
happening with Gospel for Asia.
If you’re a consumer of North
American Christian media, you’ve
probably already heard some of the
allegations against one of the
world’s largest Christian charities.
We used our best journalistic
skills to find and present balanced
information on this unfolding situation. What we encountered in our
research was, as we expected, goodhearted people on both sides of this
complicated and difficult issue.
What struck us as deeply true,
even as we tried to make sense of
the very different accounts given by
both sides, was the need to not shy
away, as unpleasant as it is, from
telling a story that may not make a
Christian charity look very good,
and certainly shows division within
the Body. It’s uncomfortable.
We truly hope that for all concerned, and mostly for the countless people helped by Gospel for
Asia since it was founded in 1978,
that this situation can be resolved
sooner rather than later, and that,
of course, the full truth comes out
in the end. We trust it will.
By contrast, we’ve also had a lot
of fun in recent months with our
Give Your Pastor a Break contest.
What a pleasure to read the nomin-
ation forms outlining why so many
think their pastor deserves a break.
When we finally held our random
draw, we were laughing and cheering (the snippet in our videos section on Facebook still feels a bit
Partly we felt giddy that this
harebrained idea to encourage
pastors actually worked out. After
all, we’re not exactly Canada’s biggest magazine or endowed with
unlimited promotional resources.
But also we were giddy with the
sense that the Holy Spirit actually
worked through our imperfect efforts to advance the Kingdom.
Isn’t that where we all want to be
– writing and preaching sermons
God uses, talking to a stranger and
sensing God using our stumbling
conversation, succeeding briefly at
showing love to our children or
siblings or parents, even after we
may have managed to hurt them
We pray that all the nominees
feel blessed to read how they are
appreciated by their parishioners,
that the ten winners ( www.theEFC.
ca/pastor-contest-2016) enjoy a
refreshing free stay at their local
spiritual retreat centre, and that
the generous retreat centres who
donated to this contest also sense
God’s blessing on them. /FT
