CCBR’s abortion images and could
no longer go through with her
scheduled abortion,” says Rosendal.
“After meeting with her we realized
she needed much help. Several colleagues connected with pregnancy
support services, and as a result the
young woman could be offered food,
clothing, housing and free 3-D ultrasounds. Both the baby and her mom
benefited from various pro-life organizations working together.”
Making abortion unthinkable
The educational arm changes
hearts and minds. The pastoral arm
takes care of women in crisis after
their minds have been changed.
The political arm keeps pro-life
politicians aware of the changing
consensus and works toward elect-
ing pro-life politicians. The three
arms of the movement at times
come into conflict on strategy, es-
pecially when they’re focusing on
the same area, but as Mike Schouten
says, “There will always be overlap,
and it’s especially then that the or-
ganizations involved need to show
grace and respect to each other.”
Ultimately, he says, we all desire
the same goal – that abortion would
be illegal and unthinkable. /FT

A brief legal history of
abortion in Canada
In 1969 abortion was decriminalized under Prime
Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. In 1988 all restrictions
surrounding abortion were struck down in the R. v.
Morgentaler Supreme Court decision.
Since then there have been no restrictions on
abortion in Canada, the only developed nation to
have no such laws other than China and North Korea.
Pro-life efforts to restrict abortion access run counter
to the majority of Canadians, who support the status
quo to some degree. They also run counter to two
of the three major political parties – the Liberals
and the New Democratic Party – who require their
parliamentarians vote pro-choice.
