To meet Batoul today you would never believe the pain
and suffering in her life before visiting the Calgary Bibles
for Missions Thrift Store five years ago.
After emigrating to Canada in 1991 Batoul married in 1997.
In the first week of marriage Batoul’s husband moved
her to Calgary, Alberta, far away from family and friends,
completely isolating her. Soon after, a cycle of physical,
emotional and sexual abuse began. Neighbours routinely
called the police and Batoul’s husband was taken away.
She was asked to charge him but he had a powerful mental
hold on her. Batoul was terrified and kept silent.
When asked how she first came to the BFM Thrift Store in
Calgary Batoul says, “It was 2006, my husband had left, my
oldest child was seven and my youngest was four-months-old. I had no money and no support. But I was a shopper
at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store in Calgary.
“One day one of the volunteers noticed that I was upset.
She asked me what was wrong. I didn’t know how to
respond, I just broke down and told her everything. She
comforted me and made me feel better.
“I started going to the store all the time, even when I
wasn’t shopping. I started growing relationships with
the volunteers and I felt comfortable with them. I
became a volunteer and I loved it.
“I didn’t really believe in God but I knew
that the volunteers were Christians and I
started to learn about God based on what
the volunteers shared with me. I began
reading the Bible and if I had any questions
I would ask one of the volunteers. My
daughters became involved too. We were
invited to church where we began to learn
more about Christ and became so much
stronger in our faith.
“In 2012 we were in a bad car accident. My church family
was there for us immediately, checking up on us every day,
bringing us food and praying for us. They kept us strong.
This touched us deeply because nothing like this had ever
happened to us before.
My favourite verse in the Bible is Deuteronomy 31: 6 -
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified
because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He
will never leave you or forsake you.” I see God in every
volunteer at our store, I love them dearly. I love my church
family and I love my four girls. We have never been more
close or happy in our whole lives and we owe it all to the
Calgary BFM Thrift Store, our church and above all to our
Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”
