God as a genie, it's one of the easiest
traps we can find ourselves falling into.
We come to him when we find ourselves
in need, or in need of a way out. Genies
tend to be very popular in movies like
Aladdin, shows like Fairly Odd Parents
and even songs like “Genie in a Bottle”
by christina aguilera.
There tends to be a very unbalanced
relationship between the person requesting a wish and the genie. For a
really long time, i saw God as my genie.
Don’t get me wrong, i am not saying
that God cannot give you the things
you desire and need, but the biggest
danger to our relationship with him is
only seeing him this way.
in high school my relationship with
God was very much like this. The worst
part about it was i saw nothing wrong
with only seeing him as a genie. i didn’t
really care to have a meaningful relationship with him. i cared more to have the
stuff i asked for than the God i needed.
To make matters worse, it was hard
for me to believe that the creator of
heaven and earth would even desire to
have a friendship with me. i mean, why
me? What was so special about me? i
didn’t see it or understand it thoroughly.
One day, i came across this scripture
that Jesus spoke, “i no longer call you
servants, because a servant does not
know his master’s business. instead, i
have called you friends” (John 15: 15).
Friends? Jesus calls me friend?
The more i kept reading the Bible, the
more i understood that i was actually
created to have a deep relationship with
God. he sincerely desired to be friends
with me and for me to understand his
desire for me.
Seeing God as a genie was hurting
me. ignoring and neglecting the relationship we are all created for is costly.
Jesus plainly says, “Without me, you
can do nothing” (John 15: 5). Even in
spite all the things we wish for and get
– like romantic relationships, designer
materials, acceptance, popularity, etc.
– none of these things can truly satisfy
us. We will still be left empty without a
relationship with him.
When we want
we see God only
for what he can
give us rather than
for who he is
That’s exactly what happened to me
– i fell into the trap of seeing God only
like a genie. The things i asked for never
really gave me the peace i was after. i
became frustrated with God when he
didn’t answer as quickly as i’d like. as
easily as i said it, i didn’t really love God.
my mentality was pulling me away from
if you are honest with yourself, maybe
you too have fallen into this deception.
Sometimes, when we want something
badly, we begin to see God only for what
he can give us rather than for who he is.
i assure you, beyond the thing(s) you
are seeking him for is a deeper relationship that can give you the peace you
truly need. When we come to him for
the friend he is, the things we want will
never replace the God we need.
