Kara Pecknold ’93
After Kara Pecknold graduated from ;;; in ;;;; with a
degree in English literature, she pursued a number of career
options. Those experiences unearthed an ongoing fascination
with language and design—and the global impacts of
each. This led her to pursue a master’s degree in Applied
Arts. As part of her thesis, Pecknold immersed herself in
the opportunities for development through design. “In the
name of charity, a lot of money gets put into projects that
can’t be sustained,” she says. “It made me wonder how we
could, under the complex process that is the development

arena, make better things for people in a manner that
allows them to be part of it, and to use resources they can
actually sustain.” Her solution to provide simple branding
to a cooperative group of weavers that she worked with in
Rwanda called Covaga. The branding, which was created
through a collaboration with the Rwandan weavers, gave
them an identity that helps them stand out in their own
market and trade shows around the country. Pecknold plans
to continue to create designs that impact social systems.
